Donations and Sweets "You have a chance to do an extra credit service project," said Mrs. Mondragon, my language arts and social studies teacher. "Hey! Let's do the this together." whispered Kaitlyn. "Sure!" I replied. I remembered being in the hospital when I was five years old. I had to stay in the hospital for a week. There, every "scary" thing I did (needles) I would always get a stuffed animal. I wondered, "Hmm. How does the hospital have so many toys to give out." I then realized that the toys would give a bit of happiness and comfort to a child like me. I talked to Kaitlyn about raising money for the kids at hospitals. She agreed but we later found out that the toys would be unsanitary. "Let's do a children's hospital like CHOC, Children's Hospital of Orange County." said Kaitlyn. "That is a great idea!" I answered. "And I also heard about families that don't have enough money for their kid to have surgery. Instead of raising money for toys, we could raise money for a family to help pay for surgery," said Kaitlyn. "Since you like cooking, we could sell baked goods to earn money," I said. So we stayed up on a Saturday night to bake some cookies. We went around, door to door, to friends and family, and walked around at a soccer game collecting donations. Our goal was $400, however, we were able to raise $368.50. A few weeks later, Kaitlyn's mom took us to CHOC to give them the donations. There, we were able to get a little tour of the first two floors seeing different parts of the new hospital tower. For example, Kaitlyn and I were able to see the little outdoor play area, movie room, and the hospital's very own radio station for the patients. I learned in the tour that the patients still get to celebrate Halloween, Christmas and so much more. There is a little library and meditation and prayer room. These little things are for the patients but also for the parents. Being a very sick hospital patient is not just overwhelming for the child but also for the parent having a new and complete change in their life. The hospital provides the comfort to the parents as well. Now I really understood how the money could really help someone out. It could relieve the a little stress from the parent(s). I had to be eighteen or older to see anything more than just the first two floors. Towards the end of the trip I knew that I would definitely be back again, helping some more. At the end of the trip, I felt very happy and proud of us two because this money could help a patient actually come outside of the hospital. It would be one step closer to having a chance to actually celebrate Christmas with friends and family at home. Rooms like the movie room or the little play are no longer needed because patient can go to the public theater or to the park. This project inspired me to continue to help people and showed me that a little step can make a huge impact. I am so glad I had this amazing opportunity to see how it feels to do an act of kindness. 1. What issue will your service project attempt to help?
Some people don't have enough money to pay for surgery in the hospital. That could lead to the risk of losing a family member. We want to help out by donating money to Children's Hospital of Orange County. 2. What can you discover about this issue? A. Interview a member of your community about the issue. How does issue impact this person's life or the lives of the people he or she knows? Does he or she have an ideas for possible solutions? Losing someone can change your whole life around completely around. Possible solutions could be providing heath insurance for everybody so that there wouldn't be families without enough money to pay for surgery. Research national statistics related to the issue. How many people does this issue affect? Are there agencies already working to meet the needs of these people? What are the names of these agencies and what are they doing to help? This issue affects many children everywhere. Obama was trying to help by lowering the cost of health insurance. Click Here to see Save a Child's Heart. Jump Rope For Heart a foundation going through schools raising money for children who cannot afford heart surgery. Find and review news articles, fact sheets, or government reports relates to your issue to share with the class. What Happens When You Can't Afford Health Insurance What is the goal of our class service project: The goal is to spread the word about children in hospital and help some get their surgery sooner. We want to raise $500. Want will it take to plan your project? What do you need? We need to contact CHOC and ask if we could come to donate the money. Where and how will you put your idea into action? What do you need? We will go around the park at games and door to door to get donations. We want to exchange baked goods for donations, so we need the ingredients to make the goods. What do you want your idea to accomplish? If we are able to aware people about this issue, then more people could donate and possibly save more lives. How will you tell others what you've done? I want to create an essay and collage of pictures through the project and post them on my blog to show classmates. R.I.PMoses died at the age of 120, according to the Bible. He was known for freeing his people, the Hebrews, out of the Egyptians' slavery. Moses led the Hebrews toward Canaan, the promised land. On the journey, Moses brought them the Ten Commandments which Christians still use today. After 49 years of traveling Moses dies along the way, leaving Joshua in charge. He passed away leaving his brother, Aaron, behind. Moses's funeral would be held at the St. Barbara Church on Sunday starting at 3:00.
I learned that Egypt and Kush had a brother-sister relationship. One conquers the other then peace. But as being lands in is a pretty weird relationship. This is also the point where religion differs form groups of people. But between Egypt and Kush, it has taught our nation great lessons. Scribes had a pretty hard job. Writing with paper and pencil is easier than writing with a stylist in a clay tablet. If you make a mistake you can easily erase it off the paper than to rub it or start completely over on a clay tablet. In class, I was able to write a message in cuneiformon a clay tablet like the scribes did. It was pretty hard with all the lines and symbols needed to make one simple letter. I wrote only two words and restarted many times while scribes had to write long laws and messages for the king. I learned that the main reason scribes created cuneiform was to record what was being bartered and by who, similar to a receipt. Scribes would use cuneiform to record laws and messages from the king. Some of today's jobs similar to scribes are reporters and professional writers because they write news and information to share with others that is important and useful. Writing impacts everyone today because we use writing to store our ideas, express our feelings, and learn more every single day . If there wasn't writing, it would be substituted with talking. Everything would be longer and louder since we can't write. In school, there wouldn't be any writing for students to learn and practice reading. Writing would definitely develop and change with new ways to write and the technology on how we read the writing. Today we read on smart devices and paper but later on there might be holograms instead of devices and paper. Talking about writing like this is a bit weird and cool because who knows how high technology will be in the future and this reflection all started because of scribes and cuneiform. Down below is a picture of my message in cuneiform. It says, familylove which is an impacting phrase to my family.
